Debbie Sonnenberg, born and raised in in Leduc, AB, moved to Manitoba in 1992 and began making her mark on women’s fastball. In the summer she pitched for the Winnipeg Obsession, a junior team, and during the off-season, from 1991 to 1994, put together an impressive American college career playing for Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama. She was a 4 time All-American and finished 3rd at the NAIA College World Series in 1992 and 1994.
During this time Debbie caught the eye of Softball Canada and pitched for the National Team from 1993 to 2000. In the 1994, at the World Championships she pitched a complete game 1-0 victory over New Zealand that allowed Team Canada to qualify for the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996. She also pitched in a Pan-Am Games qualifier, the Pan-Am Games and the ’96 Olympics.
As well as her international career, she continued playing Junior and Senior fastball in Canada and was on teams that won a total of 17 medals (6 Gold, 5 Silver, and 6 Bronze) including four straight Gold Medal with Winnipeg teams at the Canadian National Championships. During this run she was a 10 times Canadian All-Star and 5 time Most Valuable Pitcher and threw back-to-back perfect games in 1992 Junior Canadian Championships.
